Can AI Build Your Studio's Website?

What I've Been Working On

The fall season is upon us! 🍂

My clients' businesses are evolving, and so is mine! And I want to keep supporting you, no matter what season your business is in.

This month, I'm putting the finishing touches on a new and improved version of my Website Maintenance service! This will be perfect for those who care about being discovered online, which we all should 🫣. Because why have a pretty, professional website that no one can find? I’ll be launching my updated Website Maintenance service in October!

Until then, lock in either one of my Website Maintenance packages for 30% off through the end of this year.*

This special offer is only for you, my email subscribers!

The Fear of AI Taking Over Designer Jobs

“AI is taking over my job” was my thought when my friend, a book community leader, raved about designing her website with Claude Design, an AI design tool. You enter a prompt, and it puts a website together with the content you feed it. Does it look good? Actually, it’s not bad. But will it work for you? Probably not.

As an owner of a design studio, I know firsthand how running a business has its ups and downs.

After about 3 years of professionally building websites under “Amy Hang in Studio”, I realized that running a business is like conducting a science experiment. Every few months, I’m trying to figure out:

“How can I get 10 more leads next month? How do I consistently increase my revenue to $10k a month?”

Look out for next week’s newsletter issue to read more about my “science experiments” in my business and what it means to get your website to work for you. (Hint: if you don’t have a CTA button on the hero section of your homepage, that needs to change.)

The good news is a lot of us creatives are against using AI for the creative side of our work (in creating music, building a brand logo, and designing a website). For my web design business, AI works best during the ideation phase. It does a great job for research and helping me make strategic decisions. However, remember that AI can make mistakes, so read AI answers thoroughly and make the necessary changes to keep the information accurate to your business.

Sooner or later, those who aren't seeing any conversion on their AI-designed website will realize they're spending way too many hours tweaking the spacing, layout, and paragraphs in the About section on the homepage.

I can’t say I don’t feel some type of nervousness this year because of AI. But I know designing a website isn't just about putting colors, images, and layouts together. You need a strategic partner who can help you with your business goals via a website.

In the end, you’ll feel more relieved when you have more time to coach, teach your students, and even get more time back to spend with your loved ones.

Why I Believe Businesses Still Need A Strategic Human Website Designer

AI can help with your design choices, but how much “thought” went into it? Now you’re about three hours into a chat with your friend Claude, going back and forth about the people in the images it created and asking it to change the tone of the service page.

Here are three reasons why I believe businesses still need a strategic human website designer (especially if we offer a paid service or product):

  1. To get more time on the work we’re experts in.
You know what you’re good at, so let that skill be your moneymaker. My expertise is in website design. I want more time to work on websites, not to stress about whether I’m filling out my business taxes correctly, what the latest social media trend is, or how to pitch a partnership.

Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks and projects to those who are experts in the field you need help in.

  2. To make sure the website doesn’t “break”.
We, business owners, need a second brain to keep our website in check. If you built it with a strong structure from the beginning, a monthly checkup is the least you can do. AI can’t replace your new professional headshot on your About page or change the font size on mobile. Websites need to be checked and updated on a regular basis. What happens if you don’t update it? Your layout or contact form could break or stop showing up. If you’d like a human web designer to maintain your website, check out this Website Maintenance service.

If you’re not very technical, that’s okay! While you’re busy coaching and teaching, I’ll quietly support you in the background. That way, no time is wasted, and you’ll get more time back for yourself while earning more.

  3. AI can still make mistakes.
On every AI platform, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc., will state that they can make mistakes. So, double-check the content by thoroughly reading their answers and the resources they used to gather the information. While an article or a homepage created by AI could look decent enough, you’re still selling to humans. You want to create something that you’re proud of and connects them with your human touch.

One Small Website Fix

Edit your images before uploading to your website to save storage space and avoid spending time and energy adjusting them in the website backend.

Decide the dimensions of your featured blog images. Ask yourself: do you want them square, 4:3, 5:4, or 16:9?

A good image size for the web is 2000 px. There’s no need for it to be any bigger, or it can slow down your website. Any smaller, the image will look blurry.

Don’t forget to add your site icon. The best size is 512x512 px.
